Re "Many in GOP say default wouldn't be that bad" (Page A1, Oct. 9): The crisis we face is less about Obamacare than it is about democracy itself.
Issues aside, what separates left from right are opposing views of what we're about. On the one side are people who believe we are in it together. On the other are people who believe we are each in it for ourselves. Those people are mistaken. Because, like it or not, we truly are in it together.
The notion that we are in it together is the underpinning of democracy. To reject that premise is to reject the foundation of this country. That's what underlies the readiness of some to destroy it. Nations do not last forever. But the first and oldest democracy on earth must continue for the good of our people -- and the world.
