Government shutdown could last a long time

Re "House GOP's backers flinch" (Page A1, Oct. 10): The Republicans will not allow the government to start back up until a Republican is elected to the presidency in 2016. We are all in for a long haul of no government and no services until we elect whomever they say we have to in order to get the government going again.

The election of 2012 has been nullified and we are at the mercy of a group of greedy saboteurs. They will defund Medicare and Social Security next -- Paul Ryan says so. My Republican-leaning acquaintances say we don't need government anyway. If they can't be the ones in charge, they will bring our nation to its knees.

This can not be allowed to go on. We will have lost our democracy for good if blackmail takes the place of the rule of law.
