Re "Changing Redskins' name is her goal" (Page A1, Oct. 10): Native Americans are people, not mascots. Sports teams may be named be named for legendary warriors of the past, such as Trojans, Spartans or Vikings. But we would never accept names based on derogatory stereotypes of Jews, Chinese, Japanese or African Americans.
Native Americans still suffer from prejudice and discrimination. When Native American leaders tell us that the term "Redskins" is hurtful, we should avoid using it. It's not enough to say we don't mean it that way. Its use during centuries of race war and attempted extermination has marked it with the dark stain of prejudice.
