Re "Want fewer prisoners? Report says preschool is a sound investment" (Viewpoints, Oct. 12): Kevin McCarty makes a very sound argument for investing in preschool for all children, especially those growing up in lower-income, at-risk households. In addition to enriching children's lives, preschool offers an opportunity to reach out to the parents of these little ones.
When my oldest of three daughters started preschool 38 years ago, it opened a new world of learning for her, and for me. There was so much parental support and guidance on how to encourage and manage my child's learning. We parents were given resources and information on everything from dealing with temper tantrums to getting through chicken pox.
Gathering the parents, as well as their 3-year-olds, into a supportive and nurturing educational program provides an opportunity to create life-changing experiences for the whole family.
