Re "Tensions high over Tahoe bears" (Page A1, Oct. 13): The biggest dangers to Tahoe area bears are the so-called "bear lovers." (I'm not talking about Ann Bryant and the Bear League, who do good work.)
When bears are allowed to eat garbage, their numbers increase beyond what the natural environment will support. At that point the bears will either starve to death or be shot. The best thing a true bear lover can do is to make a bear feel unwelcome, to peaceably pressure neighbors with garbage problems, and to report garbage problems to local code enforcement.
