Fusshoeller case shows cost of ban on same-sex unions

Re "Couple fight deportation" (Our Region, Oct. 12): For all those who may be thinking Pascale Fusshoeller got what she deserved, I have three words for you: Get a heart.

If she had been allowed to marry 15 years ago, none of this would have happened. Whose fault is that? Ours -- for not legalizing same-sex marriage so that Susan Levitz and Fusshoeller, who knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, could wed like any other couple. Without the impediments to their marriage, Levitz would have sponsored Fusshoeller for a green card. Then, had she rolled through a stop sign 15 years later, she would have had a driver's license and been documented. This insane situation would have been resolved with a traffic ticket like any other routine traffic matter, and no federal taxpayer dollars would have been wasted.
