Re "Debt crisis likely to postpone billions in aid" (Page A1, Oct. 14); Billions of dollars in Social Security checks, food stamps and unemployment benefits may be delayed or suspended because congressional negotiations have not been resolved to reopen the government.
The president publicly stated he would sign a clean continuing resolution bill if passed. Any member of the House could bring such a bill to the floor. But the Republicans passed a rule giving that right exclusively to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. So the CR is kept under lock and key with only Cantor holding the key. Yet the Republicans continue to blame the president and Democrats for the shutdown.
