Re "Employers tout health savings account plans" (Page A1, Oct. 13): Health savings accounts are more than a tax benefit. They allow people to be responsible for their own health and well-being.
Everyone understands money and with a financial stake, perhaps people will wake up and hold themselves accountable. We are a nation that has an epidemic of obesity and all the co-morbidities that go with it. We don't save and perhaps with a stake in the game, we will think about saving more and spending less.
We need to move away from assuming the government is more efficient in allocating health resources equitably and that the inability to pay is inconsequential for receiving medical care. We need to view health care as an economic good that we are responsible for so that we might take better care of the product and save for its maintenance and major overhauls that we know may be coming.
