Re "Furlough pols, permanently" (Letters, Oct. 14): The letter writer blaming Rep. John Garamendi makes a few big mistakes. When we let the architects and drivers of the shutdown off the hook, we give them a free pass to repeatedly hold the country hostage.
The blame for this shutdown doesn't lie with people like Garamendi, who had already agreed to the clean continuing resolution at sequester levels both sides agreed upon. It lies unequivocally with the extremist tea party wing of the GOP. Never have we seen a group of lawmakers so extreme and unwilling to compromise. How do you negotiate with a group of people who view the other side giving them unilateral concessions for otherwise doing their job as "negotiating?"
This isn't the fault of senior politicians, either, as many of the tea party novices were swept into office in 2010, deciding they would not follow the rules of civilized compromise nor their congressional duties.
