Re "Leaders in Senate closing in on accord" (Page A1, Oct. 15): I just had the opportunity to visit the D-Day beaches at Normandy. Unfortunately, the American military cemetery is closed due to the shutdown. So as a substitute for part of our tour, we got to visit the German cemetery.
The irony was not lost on us. Thanks to our elected representatives, we did not get to honor those brave soldiers who died protecting our right to representation, but ended up viewing the remains of those bent on annihilating it. I don't compare today's problems with those facing civilization in the 1940s. But the bleak, stark German cemetery is a reminder of what happens when democratic government appears ineffectual and vulnerable.
