Re "House budget effort fizzles" (Page A1, Oct. 15): The tea party has succeeded in shutting down the government and is on the verge of sending the United States into recession. When you hear people like Sen. Ted Cruz argue for smaller government and closing of federal agencies, think about the things that your "evil" government does for you.
Obviously we don't need to fund agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention because salmonella outbreaks don't affect people in America. We don't need agencies like the Food and Drug Administration because we never have drugs that have harmful side effects. We certainly don't need the Environmental Protection Agency because we've never had rivers start on fire in America from contamination with pollution. Since Cruz doesn't believe Americans need health insurance, we don't need to fund the National Institutes of Health to search for treatments for Alzheimer's disease, AIDS, or cancer.
Maybe we don't need Cruz and the tea party.
