Re "Pay the nation's bills, reopen the U.S. government" (Editorials, Oct. 16): The editorial is the worst commentary I've read in a long time. It reads like it was written by the White House press office with language like "hostage-taking by a minority in the House" or "these radicals are opposite of patriots", etc. It's obvious we have fringe groups on the left and right and they exert more power than they should.
I agree with the editorial on one point -- our nation should pay its bills. That's where my agreement ends. Our nation is now $17 trillion in debt and this president and Congress have failed to correct this dangerous trend. Our debt is now approximately 100 percent of our gross national product. Would any bank lend you money if this was your balance sheet?
The shame in this mess is the president and Congress have wasted an opportunity to avoid future financial disaster.
