There are many rewards for living in Northern California. Having access to locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables all year is one of the best.
Here we present a list of the 34 certified farmers markets in Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties. Many will be closing at the end of the month, but there are 10 year-round markets in the region, five of them in Sacramento County.
Since 1977, the state has allowed farmers it certifies as growing the produce themselves to sell it directly to the public free of state regulations on labeling and packaging.
Bring lots of small bills and change. Each stand is its own business and there is no central checkout. Few farmers accept credit cards.
Farmers markets accept EBT (food stamps on the Golden State Advantage card). Find the market manager, wearing a bright green shirt, to purchase tokens to spend in the market.
Certified farmers markets permit food facilities, so no animals (except service dogs) are allowed.
Smoking is not allowed.
The markets are open rain or shine. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
Bargaining for small amounts is frowned upon. Bargaining for big boxes or big amounts usually is OK.
Most of the produce is unsorted and field-run. Some of the best-tasting fruit is cosmetically challenged. Most of the produce is vine- or tree-ripened.
Bringing your own bags is highly encouraged.
