Re "Ordeal ends as GOP gives in" (Page A1, Oct. 17): The Russian roulette is over. Now we go back to the routine of congressional gridlock.
Two realities are apparent. First, our legislative system is broken. A small minority in Congress can hold our government hostage. There is apparently no place for a moral vision to drive real social change.
Second, it appears that we cannot be trusted in the international arena. The threat of default on debt makes us unreliable. This means that emerging economies will be looking elsewhere for leadership. The unassailed leadership of America in the international community is ending. The world community will look to China, India and others for moral, structural, political, and economic leadership.
I can't believe that we want to stay committed to our collective decline. Constitutional reform blended with a renewed sense of a moral vision is the only healthy way forward.
