Re "Ordeal ends as GOP gives in" (Page A1, Oct. 17): When I think about the ill feelings in Congress today, I can't help but see how it has spilled over to the rest of America. We are in the process of losing our heart for each other. The government shutdown hurts us all, directly or indirectly.
We have lost sight of what our forefathers intended for government. We still have a government that is by the people because we vote for our leaders, but we are no longer for the people. Those who say they are for the people because they don't want Obamacare offer nothing in return. Medical coverage is a right for all Americans, not just those with money or who have jobs with benefits. We may not kill our citizens with nerve gas, but we have become very good at killing the human spirit, especially those in Congress.
