Re "Ordeal ends as GOP gives in" (Page A1, Oct. 17): Now that a last-minute Band-aid has been approved to stop the limited federal shutdown and raise the debt limit, Congress should not pause to congratulate itself.
Rather, to show good faith to the people that elected them and help rebuild the stature of our government with countries around the world, Congress should continue working right through the holiday season until long-term solutions are found. Yes, give up their holiday socials, hobnobbing with special interests and family functions to restore some honor and faith in our system of government.
And, let's not forget our president, whose limited leadership skills have contributed to this mess. He, too, should stay in Washington to show support for the work of Congress and concern for the process and be immediately available to sign the final bill.
