Re "Ordeal ends as GOP gives in" (Page A1, Oct. 17): The past 16 days were unnecessary. Congress could have done this then, and saved us and the rest of the world the aggravation. It is clear the Republican Party is fractured and needs to split into the GOP and the tea party. The tea party acts more like Libertarians on steroids.
The tea party doesn't speak for the majority. And after this debacle, the next election will confirm it. Americans are conservative at heart, with liberal leanings in certain matters. But the tea party has been exposed as radicals with their own agenda above the welfare of the country, and the majority of Americans will not stand for it.
