Small group of Placer homeowners and golf club affected by finding of bacteria in water

A small group of homeowners and a golf club in Placer County have been affected by the finding of fecal coliform in their water system.

Placer County Environmental Health was informed Tuesday by Diamond Well Drilling, the company that operates the water system at the Auburn Valley Community Service District, that two of three routine samples were positive for fecal coliform bacteria.

The Auburn Valley Community Service District water system is an small public system that serves about 42 homes and the Auburn Valley Golf Club.

The system is not part of the Placer County Water Agency or City of Auburn’s water supply. The City of Auburn and Placer County Water Agency water systems are not involved or affected.

Residents of the Auburn Valley district were notified of the bacterial finding in the water and more samples were taken. County environmental health is waiting for the results of those samples to help pinpoint where the contaminants are entering the system.

The golf club brought in a potable water tanker truck so its restaurant could re-open as soon as possible, said Wesley Nicks, director of county environmental health.

Residents at the 42 residences were told to boil water before consuming. The boil water notice will remain in effect until the contamination issue is resolved.

Lifting the boil water order requires two sets of repeat samples taken at least 24 hours apart with no coliform showing up in tests.

“This does not happen that often in these public water systems because they are so closely monitored and watched,” said Nicks. “It is unusual.”

Nicks said it is more than likely something in a tank system, as opposed to something in a well, that caused the problem. Nicks said the fecal matter came from a mammal, perhaps vermin.

“We will figure it out,” he said.
