Today's BART mass transit strike is expected to snarl traffic throughout the Bay Area, but it's not just a Bay Area problem.

About 17,500 Sacramento metro area residents work in the Bay Area, the latest census figures show. Their commute generally ranges from one to two hours each way.

Most of them drive. And, unless their bosses let them work from home today, they'll be joined on the highway by tens of thousands of commuters who normally take the BART train to work.

This chart shows the metro areas - excluding our own - with the highest number of commuters who live in the Sacramento region.
