Re "Death row psych care assailed" (Capitol & California, Oct. 17): I am sorry but I am getting sick and tired of Judge Lawrence K. Karlton's coddling of murders, rapists and other scourges of society. Are we really supposed to feel sorry that Justin Alan Helzer did not get treatment while waiting to die for having murdered and dismembered five people?
The real problem here is not that he did not get treatment, but that his death sentence was never carried out because of judges like Karlton who have tied up California's death sentence process for years. If Helzer had done his killing in Texas he would not have been around long enough to need psychiatric care. If only we could move the jurisdiction of our prison system to Texas's federal court district, the problem would be resolved.
