Sacramento Bee readers share their gardening adventures.

Just in time for Halloween, LaDawn Ahlborn-Smith of Roseville shared this scary surprise – from her chickens.

“A couple of years ago, I tossed one of our pumpkins over the fence to my hens,” she said. “It was the end of the growing season and this one pumpkin had a soft spot on it.

“I thought the chickens would enjoy it,” she added. “Little did I know how creative my girls were! This is what I woke up to find in my backyard the next morning ... and just in time for Halloween!”
