Renaissance Faire returns
What: Thousands of visitors are invited to arrive in costumes at the 21st annual Folsom Renaissance Faire at Lions Park. The festival will feature jousting sessions and full armored combat between knights. Visitors can participate in archery, dancing, fencing and other activities. There will also be games, theater and a Renaissance marketplace.

Cabaret in Carmichael
What: The Sacramento Women’s Chorus will present “Willkommen! A Choral Cabaret,” an Oktoberfest musical variety show, at the La Sierra Community Center. Featured songs will be “Cabaret” and “Stop! In the Name of Love.” Totally Tapioca, a five-part a cappella group, will be special guests. Dinner tickets are sold out, but dessert tickets are available.

Breast cancer walk
What: The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraising 5K walk will begin at the west steps of the state Capitol. Proceeds raised will help with American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research, information, services and access to mammograms.

When: 8 a.m.
Cost: Free for spectators.

Ski Swap at CSUS
What: California State University, Sacramento’s popular Ski Swap will take place in the University Ballroom. The annual event is believed to be the largest college fundraiser in Northern California, attracting hundreds of skiers and snowboarders looking for bargains, according to university officials. The event is hosted by the CSUS Ski and Snowboard Club, which uses the proceeds for an annual ski and snowboarding trip. The event offers up to 50 percent discounts on new equipment from last season’s inventory of local retailers, as well as used equipment sold on consignment.

When: 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Cost: General admission for the event is $10, and $5 for students and seniors from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and $20 for early-bird shoppers at 9 a.m. Tickets are sold at the door; parking is free.
Remember the Union
What: Three former writers for the defunct Sacramento Union newspaper will speak at a panel discussion at Time Tested Books in Sacramento. Writers Gloria Glyer, Mike Curran and Pamela Martineau are scheduled to make up a panel that will remember the Union, which folded in 1994. Disgruntled compositors from the Sacramento Times and Transcript newspapers established the Sacramento Daily Union on March 19, 1851, under the editorship of Dr. J.F. Morse.
