Leading Off: Who do Giants fans favor in World Series?

This, that, and the other thing:

• With their team not in the World Series, are Giants fans pulling for a Red Sox victory more than their National League-brethren Cardinals?

Having lived in Boston, I've found many Red Sox fans to follow the Giants in the N.L., and it seems many Giants fans pull for the Red Sox.

Both fan bases enjoy two of the best baseball parks in the game – AT&T Park in San Francisco and Fenway Park in Boston – and both endured decades of futility before each won two titles within nine years.

Even during the 2011 season, the Red Sox campaigned their fans to vote for Giants players on the All-Star Game ballot, and the Giants encouraged their fans to do the same for the Red Sox.

Would that make the Yankees and Dodgers the axis of evil?

• What always makes watching the World Series difficult is having to listen to play-by-play man Joe Buck and commentator Tim McCarver.

Buck, the son of Hall of Famer Jack Buck, is nowhere near the broadcaster his late father was, not with his pompous persona that comes off as if he's talking down to the viewers.

Meanwhile, McCarver always overstates the obvious. It's surprising he doesn't say, "In order for Boston's David Ortiz to hit a home run, he'll have to swing his bat."

• Speaking of baseball announcers, let's hope Bill King's name is finally called in December for the Ford C. Frick Award and induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

It's King's seventh nomination.

Northern California fans who listened to him call Giants, Raiders and Warriors games spanning five decades and A's games from 1981 to 2005 know he was the best ever – Hall of Fame or not.

But it would be nice for the rest of the nation to know what a treasure this region had before his death in October 2005.

Giants play-by-play man Duane Kuiper is also a finalist for the Frick Award – his first nomination. But putting Kuiper in the broadcaster and scribes wing in Cooperstown, N.Y., without broadcast partner Mike Krukow would be like putting Ben without Jerry into the ice cream Hall of Fame.

What to watch

NFL: Minnesota at New York Giants, 5:40 p.m., ESPN: Something has to give for two struggling teams that have combined for one win.
