Two University of California, Davis professors have been elected to the Institute of Medicine, one of the nation’s highest honors in health and medicine.

Nancy E. Lane, a professor of internal medicine and rheumatology at UC Davis Health System, and Jonna Mazet, a professor of epidemiology and disease ecology at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, join 68 other new members and 10 foreign associates elected to the institute.

The election of Lane and Mazet was anounced Monday during the Institute of Medicine’s 43rd annual meeting. UC Davis now has a total of 13 current and emeritus faculty members who are members.

The Institute of Medicine is an independent, non profit branch of the National Academy of Sciences. Its members are recognized as distinguished individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health.

Lane, who also serves as the director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Health at UC Davis, is an internationally recognized scientist in the fields of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. She and her research team have developed a compound that directs stem cells to grow new bone which could potentially revolutionize treatments for osteoporosis. She continues to have an active rheumatology practice and has been named among the “Best Doctors in America” every year since 2004.

As the head of the university’s Wildlife Health Center, Mazet has overseen the diagnosis of novel infections, and contributed to the conservation of endangered species, from mountain gorillas in Rwanda to sea otters in California. She also founded California’s Oiled Wildlife Care Network at UC Davis, which has become the world’s premier model for wildlife emergency health response.
