Santa Clara sophomore Sadie Strain, a graduate of Christian Brothers High School, fired a career-best 2-under-par 70 on Monday to take a two-stroke lead in the Colby Invitational at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose.
Sacramento State withdrew from the tournament after its team van was involved in a "traffic altercation" on the way to the event, according to Santa Clara's athletics website.
No one was seriously injured, according to the website, and several players returned home, though Rockelle Sande and Sagee Palavivatana are competing as individuals. Sande shot an 81 and Palavivatana an 83. Santa Clara's Ashley Noda (St. Francis) also carded an 83.
The final round is today.
The Sac State men were tied for 13th place after the first two rounds of the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Sac State reported on its athletics website. Owen Taylor (tied for 23rd) shot a 1-under 71 in the second round for a par 144 total, and Cody Bates (tied for 40th) fired a 71 in the first round as part of his 3-over 147. Bates started the first round with three birdies in four holes.
The Hornets had a 590 total. San Diego leads with 557.
UCD duo in doubles semi
Adam Levie and Alec Adamson of UC Davis advanced to the ITA Northwest Regional semifinals in Moraga, where they'll play eighth-seeded Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke of Washington. Levie and Adamson surprised sixth-seeded Campbell Johnson and Filip Bergevi of Cal 8-3 in the quarterfinals.
Brett Bacharach (Del Oro High School) and James Wade of UC Davis lost their quarterfinal match to No. 9 Chase Melton and Gregory Bayane of Cal 8-3.
