Re "Six-figure fee in $2 jail suit" (Our Region, Oct. 21): What is wrong with our justice system when the plaintiffs get $2 and the attorneys get $200,000? The small amount was due to no substantive damages. Yet their attorneys are given a small fortune in fees for frivolous suits. One attorney said his clients would have accepted an apology, which I seriously doubt. If the county apologized, the attorney would have sued for even more because the county would be admitting wrongdoing.
Lawyers control our society. They get elected to office to write laws, then appoint lawyers to interpret the nuances of the laws they wrote because they are so confusing, then devise systems to pay themselves from arguing the laws they write. When did we lose control?
