Folsom Lake Crossing to close weekdays for dam construction

Published: Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013 - 12:38 pm

A key connector road in Folsom will be closed for an hour each weekday, starting Thursday, during blasting activity related to construction at Folsom Dam.

Folsom Lake Crossing will be closed between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. each weekday so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can conduct blasting to excavate portions of a new auxiliary spillway at Folsom Dam. The roadway is an important connector between the east and west sides of the city of Folsom.

The new spillway, a $900 million project, has been under construction for several years. It is designed to improve the dam’s flood capacity and provide greater protection for communities downstream, especially the city of Sacramento.

The Army Corps will hold a public meeting on the roadway closures at 6 p.m. Wednesday at 598 E. Natoma St., in Folsom.

The blasting is expected to continue for 20 working days. No blasting will occur on weekends or holidays. Each weekday during blasting, the Folsom Lake Crossing pedestrian and bicycle path will be closed for a longer period, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

During blasting hours, people traveling through the area are advised to take Riley Street and East Natoma Street as detours.
