Re "13-year-old killed by deputies while holding toy gun" (Capitol & California, Oct. 24): I am saddened by the events that unfolded in Santa Rosa.
However, I am flummoxed and appalled by the statement of Abrey Martin that officers should have known he was 13 and not some maniac.
Just the day before, of a 12-year-old boy shot and killed a teacher and wounded two classmates in Nevada. Unfortunately, murderers are not neatly arranged into age groups.
We cannot understand why this child refused to obey the deputies' repeated orders to drop what looked to be an AK-47.
Placing the blame on the deputies is infuriating. Undoubtedly, a lawsuit by the family is soon to follow. Our sympathy extends not only to the teenager's family, but to the deputies involved.
