Re "Walters misleads on high-speed rail" (Another View, Oct. 23): California High Speed Rail Authority Chairman Dan Richard claims that we need HSR to serve our fast-growing population.
Similar arguments are used to demand more freeways, airports, housing, power plants, shopping malls, diversion tunnels, and more. It is more rational to spend a fraction of those projected infrastructure costs to stabilize our population.
Affordable education, expanded job opportunities, family planning facilities, and informational programs have proven effective in stabilizing population. It's time to move away from the impossible goal of continued growth, and toward sustainability.
