More soup for chilly weather at Siam Patio

It’s generally agreed that the Marx Brothers’ 1933 classic comedy “Duck Soup” is one of the funniest films ever made.

But we weren’t looking for laughs last night when we dropped by Siam Patio for a big bowl of duck-and-noodles soup, just the thing to ward off the fall chill. Restaurant owner Kaiyakant Teerapairojn and her staff prepare some of the best Thai food in town.

As for the soup, I asked her about the sweetish, dark broth that filled our bowls, each spoonful aromatic and laden with a melange of flavors. The broth starts with the boiled bones from roasted ducks, and moves on to include star anise, cinnamon, coriander root, cloves, cardamon, peppercorns, lemongrass, kefir lime leaves and galanga (a.k.a. blue ginger).

A big pile of rice noodles and luscious shreds of tender duck are added. Then the steaming concoction is topped with chopped cilantro and scallions, and crunchy bean sprouts. A bargain at $10.
