The acts of a few can stain the efforts of many when it comes to students running amok with spray paint.

The best high school football rivalry in the Sac-Joaquin Section got off to a stumbling start this week when a replica grizzly bear in front of Granite Bay was spray painted in the black and gold of Del Oro with a large "DO" next to it.

Retaliation came swiftly: Del Oro's parking lot entrance was spray painted with expletives, and the football field was tagged with "ROLL TRIBE," a reference to Granite Bay's rooting section.

But here's what's refreshing: The student leaders of the rooting sections at both schools have urged calm and aim to represent their schools in the right way, with clever cheers and chants.

Both rooting sections vow to show tonight in Loomis which school is louder and prouder when No. 4 Del Oro hosts No. 7 Granite Bay.

"Our goal is to really emphasize what DO and GB have is a friendly rivalry, and it's not supposed to be hostile," said Isaac Jorgensen, Del Oro's senior class president and the leader of The Black Hole rooting section. "This is just as much a game between The Black Hole and The Tribe as it is between the football teams. It's a great rivalry."
