Re "Tech undermines middle class" (Letters, Oct. 23): Letter writer Roy W.E. Hecteman is right. Technology has cost jobs. When I first started working in a law office, there was one secretary to one attorney.
With word processing, the ratio changed to each secretary serving 2 attorneys.
At the time I left the field, a ratio of four to one was not uncommon, and some firms had six or seven attorneys and paralegals served by a single secretary. And, no, the secretary's paycheck did not go up four-fold over that time. Lower overhead simply provided larger profits and bonuses to management.
