I initially was dismayed at your decision to halt public commenting options for your online readers starting on Oct. 14, but now am fully supportive. I was a fairly frequent commentator, username: WharfRunner, and believe my commenting history speaks for itself in terms of responsible content.
Unfortunately, that was not the case for many others. It's easy to say that if you don't like the comments, don't read them, but that's easier said than done. I would encourage you to not revert to allowing public comment, even with more restrictive identity policies. The quality of the online edition through this website is superior to what it was prior to Oct. 14.
