Laguna Creek High School counselor Alycia Sato, right, speaks with a student about his college options in her office at the school in Elk Grove on Thursday, October 24, 2013. Sato takes on a monumental task: providing guidance to about 480 students, whatever their needs – from navigating homelessness or family breakups to applying for college. The economic downturn already has taken a big bite out of funding for counselors. Now the push for college readiness has swelled their workloads. Students drop in all day long for Sato’s help with both academic and personal problems.
