Back in spring training, nobody gave the Boston Red Sox much of a chance to reach the 2013 World Series.

After they finished in last place in the American League East with 93 losses in 2012, most oddsmakers made them 35-1 to be playing today.

Yet here they are playing the St. Louis Cardinals, one win from another World Series championship.

Nobody thought much of the Kansas City Chiefs at the beginning of the NFL season, either.

After the Chiefs finished 2-14 last season – tied with Jacksonville for the league's worst record – Las Vegas oddsmakers made them 50-1 to reach the postseason and 75-1 to win the Super Bowl.

But with a new coach and quarterback, the Chiefs are 8-0, the league's only undefeated team.

So how do oddsmakers see the Kings' chances of winning the NBA title?

How about 300-1?

What did you expect? The team hasn't reached the playoffs in seven seasons – only the Minnesota Timberwolves at nine have a longer streak of futility.

The Red Sox weren't 300-1, but Boston went from worst to first in its division, and the darkhorse Chiefs are ahead of the field at the halfway point.

Few thought Mayor Kevin Johnson could assemble a bidding group and develop a plan strong enough to snatch the Kings out of the hands of Chris Hansen and his group from Seattle.

At one point, the odds of Sacramento keeping its team felt like 300-1.

But the Kings stayed.

New ownership.

New coaching staff.

A new era.

The Kings in the playoffs? The odds may be long, but less likely things have happened.
