Sac State's Safron gets Big Sky honor

For the second time this season, Sacramento State junior quarterback Garrett Safron has been named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Safron had a school-record 505 yards of total offense in the Hornets' 51-48 overtime loss to Montana on Saturday at Hornet Stadium.

He completed 41 of 58 passes for 412 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. His completions and passing yardage set school records.

• UC Davis senior opposite Devon Damelio was named the Big West Conference women's volleyball Player of the Week, the conference announced. She totaled 40 kills and 27 digs in victories over UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton.

Del Potro, Wawrinka win

at ATP World Tour Finals

• Juan Martin del Potro, in the ATP World Tour Finals for the first time since 2007, beat Richard Gasquet 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5 to open Group B play in London.

Gasquet produced some stunning shots but struggled to return del Potro's big serve in a match laced with unforced errors and winners by both players.

In Group A, Stanislas Wawrinka, debuting in the season-ending tournament, defeated Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-7 (0), 6-3.

• The first-round Davis Cup match between Great Britain and the United States will be played at San Diego's Petco Park from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, two sources said.

General

• President Barack Obama saluted the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks at the White House. The Blackhawks, who also won in 2010, have been the only team from Obama's hometown to win championships during his presidency. "To the Bulls, Bears, Cubs, White Sox – I am term-limited, so you guys have got to get moving," Obama said.

• All drug tests from horses that ran in last weekend's Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita came back clear, the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Lab at UC Davis announced.

• Two-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Sun Yang of China was ordered to be kept detained for a week for driving without a license after his sport-utility vehicle was hit by a bus.
