Add Sacramento’s Arden Fair mall to the list of shopping complexes opening Thanksgiving night and going all day the next day.
Steve Reed, the mall’s security manager, said Tuesday that three major anchors – Sears, JCPenney and Macy’s – will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, and remain open all night and into the next day, closing at regularly scheduled evening hours on Nov. 29.
Reed said that some, not necessarily all, stores inside Arden Fair also will be participating in the Nov. 28-29 holiday season shop-a-thon kickoff. He said a list of participating stores will be released as Thanksgiving Day draws near.
For Arden Fair, it will be the earliest holiday shopping season opening time ever.
“I’ve been here for 14 years, and we’ve done four or five in the morning. And midnight, but not 8 (p.m.),” Reed said. “We’re going to be ready for a steady stream of people, with ebbs and flows throughout the following day.”
Nationwide, retailers have been announcing ever-earlier holiday shopping season opening times, with major-name retailers leading the way. Last year, Roseville's Westfield Galleria saw stores opening at varying hours from 11 p.m. Thanksgiving through 6 a.m. the next day. Retail industry analysts are already citing pressure on store operators with Thanksgiving Day coming late in November this year, cutting into the number of days that retailers have to ring up sales on the all-important “Black Friday” after Thanksgiving and through Christmas Eve, which comes on a Tuesday next month.
