Sacramento City district to host forum on state funding

Published: Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013 - 3:38 pm

The Sacramento City school district will seek public comment Wednesday night on local educational priorities in preparation for changes in the way public schools are funded.

The discussion starts at 6 p.m. in the Serna Center, 5735 47th Ave.

Public feedback will help the district create a spending accountability plan required by the state under the new Local Control Funding Formula.

The formula is designed to give schools added funds for English learners and students from low-income families.

While school districts will have discretion in how to spend the funds, the state and local residents must judge how effectively the money is spent.

Three entities, the state Department of Education, the governor's office and the state Board of Education are working on regulations for districts to comply with the law.

Then districts are to create their own accountability plans to ensure the funds are spent on the state's education priorities, including implementation of the new Common Core Standards.

Sacramento City officials say the discussion Wednesday night is intended to lay the foundation for development of the local plan.
