With so many out of work, legislators shouldn't get raises

Re "Pay hike OK'd for elected officials" (Page A1, Nov. 6): California has the highest poverty in the country and most our legislative readers are accepting 5 percent raises.

One can't help but wonder that these two issues are connected. As a teacher, I haven't seen a raise in 7 years and this year I will receive a 2 percent raise (which doesn't cover inflation over the last 7 years).

Though I've rarely voted Republican, the Republican legislators quoted in the article are right on: how do legislators justify taking a raise when so many Californians are out of work? I did not vote for Prop 30 last year to see politicians take some right off the top for themselves.
