Re "Sister of Sacramento is ready for a new chapter in her life" (Stuart Leavenworth, Nov. 3): Editorial page editor Stuart Leavenworth's column on retired Bee editorial board member Ginger Rutland recognized her laudable work at your newspaper.

I remember her speech years ago to local public relations/communications professionals. We PR pros make a habit out of pestering journalists for our clients, and she was asked what frustrated her about our efforts.

"When you contact us about an issue and you don't research what we've already written about it," she said. "You haven't done your homework."

Her words always stuck with me. Not a bad credo. Be prepared, do your homework.

Ginger Rutland always did hers. She didn't suffer fools gladly, whatever their station. Her time on the editorial board was marked by intellectual rigor tempered by empathy. We all benefitted from the fairness and heart she brought to public discourse.
