Re "Strangers become guests" (Page A1, Nov. 5): I would recommend folks making reservations with Airbnb to be cautious in arranging a stay at an unknown residence. I've heard good things and bad things about Airbnb.
For many years, the term "B&B" referred to "Bed and Breakfast." We've stayed at some wonderful B&Bs. Airbnb in reality is a "Bed and Bath." I had a horrible experience reserving an Airbnb in Kona this past April. The room was dingy, stuffy, beat-up furniture, unstocked bathroom (no towels, soap or toilet paper) and three small yappy dogs.
I left the owner a note and fled to a hotel in Kona, costing me $300+ for two nights versus an anticipated $124. I had to argue with Airbnb to get a one day refund vs the two I originally reserved. Get references first!
