Re "Urgent action needed on 'superbugs'" (Editorials, Nov. 3): The editorial board is right, antibiotic resistance is a serious problem, and it largely reflects the unnecessary use of antibiotics in meat production.
According to the Pew Charitable Trusts, 80 percent of antibiotics sold in the United States are used to fatten healthy livestock -- not to treat sick people.
Public support for legislation to end this practice would help, but don't wait for Congress to take action. Together we can help preserve antibiotics' effectiveness by voting with our forks. Buy meat raised without unnecessary drugs and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Will drug-free meat cost more? Maybe. But think about the hefty cost we'll all pay if antibiotics stop working.
Infections used to be a major cause of death and loss of limb. Do we really want to return to such a time?
