Offense: The 49ers convert just two third-down situations and lose Vernon Davis to a concussion in the second quarter. The unit was struggling before that and certainly didn't have any firepower afterward. San Francisco finishes with 46 net passing yards. Grade: D-

Defense: The unit has a solid game but loses starters Ray McDonald (ankle) and Eric Reid (concussion). The 49ers allow only one touchdown, but in this game, one touchdown is enough for the win. Grade: B

Special teams: A deflected punt by the Panthers turns into a takeaway for the 49ers. LaMichael James and Anthony Dixon replace Kyle Williams in the return game with no noticeable difference. Phil Dawson is 3 for 3 on field goals. Grade: B

Overall: The 49ers come out of their bye with their sloppiest, sleepiest performance of the season. Division rival Seattle has pulled out wins in these kind of games this season. The 49ers are 2 1/2 games behind the Seahawks. Grade: D-
