Next two events announced for UC Davis’ ‘Vintage Wine Tasting’ series: Burgundy and California

Published: Monday, Nov. 11, 2013 - 1:03 pm

Wednesday’s Food & Wine section featured a story on a very special new set of events at UC Davis dubbed “Vintage Wine Tasting.” These seminars, with discussion led by Darrell Corti, offer a rare opportunity to taste well-aged wines from some of the world’s greatest producers.

The debut event on Oct. 29 spotlighted Bordeaux from the 1960s, including such top tier producers as Chateau Latour and Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. The bottles themselves are sourced from UC Davis’ special collections cellar, which houses bottles donated to the school’s enology and viticulture programs.

Next up: detours to Burgundy (1959-1962) on Jan. 22; and on May 13, California circa the late 1960s and early 1970s, with pit stops into 1987 and 1995. The California tasting should be especially illuminating, with a chance to taste a style of winemaking that’s all but extinct in the state today - a time when cabernet sauvignion showed off rather than suppressed its inherent herbal qualities, and wines were built more for long-term evolution versus immediate and ripe gratification.

These tastings, which are organized by Matthew Lewis of wineCentric, cost $200 and geared for serious lovers and scholars of wine. Along with a flight of vintage wine and Corti’s always erudite presentation, the event includes aperitif wines and a post-tasting soiree with snacks, more wine and a chance to socialize with fellow tasters.

The “Vintage Wine Tasting” series has already proven to be a hit. The Bordeaux event was sell-out with waiting list, and seats are already filling fast for the next events. Considering the Burgundy tasting will include 1962 Domaine Romanee Conti Grands Echezeaux, one of the world’s great (and greatly expensive) wine properties, better grab a seat ASAP if you want a sample.

Here’s the full line-up of wines for the next two events. To reserve a seat: (970) 376-1222.
