A 26-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in January at a Davis church entered a no-contest plea the day before his case was scheduled for trial.

Christopher Lynn Turk on Tuesday pleaded no contest to forcible rape with the use of a deadly weapon and robbery. Under the plea agreement, Turk will receive a sentence of 15 years to life for rape with a deadly weapon and an additional five years for robbery, according to a Yolo County District Attorney’s Office news release.

On Jan. 26, Turk, who had been staying at the homeless shelter provided by Davis Community Church, noticed the victim looking for a pet adoption location. Turk lured her inside the church by leading her to believe that she had found the pet adoption site. At the top of the stairwell, he threatened the victim with a pair of scissors, then raped her, authorities said.

Turk took the woman’s cell phone and money, and told her to count to 100 before leaving the location. The woman followed the instructions, then went home and called police.

Turk was arrested two days later and was found in possession of the victim’s cell phone. A forensic search of the phone established that Turk was using it to call relatives a short time after the rape. DNA taken from the crime scene and the victim also identified him as the rapist, authorities said.

“The brazenness in which this crime was committed against a perfectly innocent stranger demands that Mr. Turk receive a life sentence,” District Attorney Jeff Reisig said in a written statement. “By reaching this plea agreement we avoid requiring the victim to relive this nightmare in front of a jury and the defendant.”

Turk is to be sentenced Dec. 13 by Yolo Superior Court Judge Stephen L. Mock.
