A proposed multi-use sports facility at Cal Expo could become home to Sacramento’s new pro soccer team.

Erika Bjork, spokeswoman for the team, Sacramento Republic FC, said in an email that Warren Smith, head of the team’s ownership group, will attend a special meeting of the California Exposition and State Fair board of directors Thursday morning to discuss Ovations Food Service’s proposals to build an 8,000-seat multi-use facility that would include a full grass soccer pitch. If the facility is built in time, Sacramento Republic FC will be signed as a tenant and play its inaugural season home games at Cal Expo, Bjork said.

The team had been negotiating for use of Sacramento City College’s Hughes Stadium. An exclusive negotiating window, during which the two sides were to work out a deal, expired in June, although the school and the team said last month that they were still trying to work out terms.

Sacramento Republic is scheduled to make its USL Pro debut in March.

The meeting agenda calls for review and approval of a community multi-use sports field project and agreement. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the Administration Building boardroom at Cal Expo, 1600 Exposition Blvd.
