Ask Sacto 911 crime Q&A: Any arrests in 1990s slayings of two women kidnapped in Granite Bay?

Published: Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013 - 9:08 pm

About 20 years ago, two females were found killed in Granite Bay. One was a teacher and the other was a young mother whose small child was found home alone. Has there been any disposition or progress in these homicides?

The slayings of Cindy Wanner in 1991 and Cherilyn Hawkley in 1993 remain unsolved.

Although both women were kidnapped and strangled, Placer County sheriff’s investigators have said they do not believe the two homicides are related.

Wanner, 35, of Rancho Cordova disappeared from her sister’s Granite Bay home Nov. 25, 1991.

She left behind her shoes, jacket, car and her 11-month-old daughter, who was found unattended in a high chair at the home. According to stories in The Bee, less than 45 minutes had elapsed between the time Wanner was last seen by her sister and brother-in-law and when her husband arrived to find her gone.

Nineteen days later, a quail hunter found her body, clad only in a brassiere, face down among trees off Foresthill Road east of Auburn. An autopsy revealed that she had survived up to two weeks following her disappearance. Authorities said it did not appear that she was sexually assaulted, but they couldn’t rule it out.

Hawkley, 39, a fifth-grade teacher at Eureka School in Granite Bay, was strangled within hours after she left her classroom early in the evening of Oct. 29, 1993.

Her body was found Oct. 31 inside a van that was parked beneath a grove of trees off Elmhurst Drive, 1.8 miles from her school. She had been strangled with a cord or rope, which was never found. Sheriff’s officials said she had not been robbed or sexually assaulted.
