Placer County sheriff’s investigators seek to determine the origin of a suspicious substance that led to evacuation of Granite Bay law offices this morning.
Deputies responded at 10:51 a.m. to the law offices of Herrig & Vogt on Douglas Boulevard after an employee at the firm opened an envelope containing a white, powdery substance, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. The office suite was evacuated, and the Roseville Fire Department’s hazardous materials team sampled the substance.
It was determined that the powder was calcium carbonate, a non-hazardous substance used as a binder in many everyday items, such as toothpaste, cleanser and cement, authorities said.
Employees were allowed back into the building after about two hours.
Investigators took the envelope as evidence and will try to trace its origin, sheriff’s officials said.
