A driver was able to escape from his van after a crash that left his vehicle hanging by a tire from an overcrossing of the Capital City Freeway.

The crash occurred about 2:19 p.m. A white Chevrolet van was eastbound on Marconi Avenue at Connie Drive when another vehicle made contact with the van, causing the van to veer to the right, crashing through the cyclone fencing on the side of the overpass, said California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Officer Lizz Dutton.

The van was left hanging by a single tire, caught in the fencing and vegetation that also was left hanging from the overpass, Dutton said. The van, she said, belonged to a tire company and was carrying tires. The driver managed to crawl to the rear of van and get out of the vehicle.

Traffic on the Capital City Freeway backed up in both directions between Exposition Boulevard and Interstate 80.

The van was removed by about 3:30 p.m. But traffic was snarled for hours due to lane closures required to allow Sacramento city crews to remove the dangling fence and vegetation. The CHP traffic incident website reported all lanes open just before 8 p.m.

Dutton said the crash is being investigated by the Sacramento Police Department, which seeks to locate the other vehicle involved in the incident. It is described as maroon with a partial license plate number of 4JBW. Anyone with information pertaining to the crash is asked to call the Sacramento Police Department at (916) 264-5471.
