What is going on with Sergio Alvarez, the West Sac PD officer arrested this year for raping women while on duty?

– Tom, West Sacramento

Sergio Alvarez remains in Yolso County Jail charged with 35 counts of sexually assaulting women while on patrol.

His trial currently is scheduled for Jan. 6. A trial readiness conference is set for Dec. 20, according to the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office website.

Alvarez was arrested Feb. 26 on suspicion of sexual assault and kidnapping following a five-month investigation that police said began when a woman told another patrol officer that she had been sexually assaulted by a uniformed officer. Alvarez was immediately placed on administrative leave, and Sacramento Police Department detectives were asked to aid West Sacramento police in the investigation.

Investigators subsequently identified five more victims of assaults that allegedly occurred between Oct. 1, 2011 and Sept. 23, 2012.

The Yolo County district attorney convened a grand jury, which handed down an indictment.

Alvarez, who had worked for the West Sacramento Police Department since 2007, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
